Tiananmen: Zhang Yuning's Wing Defense at Beijing Guoan

In 1899, Zhang Yuning returned to China and joined the Women's Association again. She became one of the leading figures in the association and played an important role in promoting female education and cultural activities.

During this time, Zhang Yuning also became involved in the defense of Tiananmen. When the Qing government ordered the construction of a new city wall in Tiananmen, Zhang Yuning and other members of the Women's Association refused to cooperate. They believed that it would be better to protect the existing city walls rather than build a new one. However, the Qing government did not listen to them, and the construction of the new city wall began.

On August 29, 1899, the Qing army attacked Tiananmen. Zhang Yuning and other members of the Women's Association fought bravely to defend the city wall. Although they were outnumbered and outgunned, they held the wall until reinforcements arrived from other parts of China.

The defense of Tiananmen was a significant victory for the Women's Association and helped to solidify their position as a powerful force in Chinese society. Zhang Yuning's bravery and determination inspired countless women in China to fight for their rights and freedoms.
